They have more neuronal connections in their brain, and the more they use their brain (say, the language section) the stronger those connections will get. The earlier they’re introduced to another tongue, the easier it will be for them to pick it up, a skill the brain unlearns by the middle-school years, as anyone who's struggled to learn a foreign language later in life will know. Children in the golden age absorb knowledge like a sponge, more rapidly and successfully than at any other time during their life.
